FAQs

What can we help you with?

Product Information

With so many mattress brands, models and material types, shopping for a mattress these days is something closer to a nightmare for many people.

And although we are strong believers that a natural latex mattress is best to sleep on, we also understand that it is not for everyone. If you however have decided that latex is right for you, then Khun Mattress might just tick all the right boxes:

  • 100% Natural Latex (watch out for brands that mix in synthetic latex and still pretend it is natural, sneaky business!)
  • simple, no-nonsense design (we just don’t like to over complicate things)
  • eco-friendly; natural latex is recyclable and bio-degradable when it does end up in a landfill (oh, and we will also donate or recycle your old mattress if needed).
  • our cover is made from cotton, a biodegradable material. Conventional cotton however uses more insecticides and water than any other single crop. That is why we use only certified organic cotton.
  • for our organic range we use latex milk from organic farms who practice sustainable farming methods.
  • reasonably priced. When it comes to buying a latex mattress, you are actually lucky to be living in Thailand! Thailand is the biggest exporter of natural latex, or ‘white gold’, in the world. Our plantations are just a footstep away from the factory which means you will have some money left to hide under that mattress. A feeling which can actually help you sleep even better at night ;-).

Cotton is a natural material that allows better airflow and moisture absorption.

Our GOTS certified organic cotton is grown using environmentally friendly methods, without the use of toxic pesticides, synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organism (OGM’s).

It is better for the environment and beneficial for sufferers of skin allergies related to the chemicals used in non-organic cotton farming.

Choosing a mattress for yourself is already not an easy task. And it gets a little harder if you want to buy one along with your partner who might prefer a different firmness level.

That is why we offer couples the 'split firmness' or 'dual comfort zone' meaning you can choose 2 different firmness zones on different sides of the mattress (soft/medium/firm).

By the way, natural latex foam mattresses absorb movement very well, so these mattresses are ideal for couples who wake easily from each other’s movements.

So we can't keep your partner from snoring, but at least you can rest assured that you will be comfortable ;-).

We are dead-serious about what goes inside our mattresses. Khun Mattress aims to be as friendly as possible for your health, safe to the environment and fair to the rubber farmer.

But hey, everyone can put these claims up on their website. When shopping for a new mattress we strongly advise you to check if independent, third-party certifications from reliable authorities are available. So here we will show you ours.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

Our cotton cover is certified by GOTS, the most reliable standard for certifying textile as organic.

Eco-INSTITUT

The Eco-Institut, located in Cologne, Germany, tested our latex foam for the presence of hazardous emissions and components. Oh, and we passed the test of course! You can check the certificate our factory obtained here.

Rubber Authority of Thailand

Our mattress consists of minimum of 96% natural latex content tested by the Rubber Authority of Thailand. This is one of the highest percentages in the bedding industry by the way.

TUV Rheinland/LGA Products

TUV Rheinland/LGA Products performed a durability and resiliency test: the latex foam was compressed 60,000 times (around a life time use) and still in tip top shape!

SGS (no VOC, no SBR)

Our mattress complies with international VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) requirements that safeguard the environment and human health.

ACT IFOAM

IFOAM accreditation delivered by the Governmental Agency ACT (Agriculture Certification Thailand) for latex harvested from organic rubber farms in Thailand.

ACT EU Group

ACT certifies that operations and products comply with EU organic regulations.

ACT CANADA PROGRAM

Products certified according to the COR (Canadian Organic Regime) standards and in compliance with the terms of the US-Canada Organic Equivalence Arrangement.

Our factory is listed here as an certified organic operator (type the name “Theptex” in the search bar).

MATERIALS USED

Our Cover:

Removable outer cover in organic cotton [GOTS Certified] with quilted padding.

Our Latex:

20cm/8″ Latex Foam (15cm/6″ + 5cm/2″ comfort layer).

The foam is processed using the Dunlop method with natural latex milk from rubber trees in Thailand.

For our organic range the milk we use is harvested from (IFOAM) certified organic rubber plantations.

Theptex 100% natural mattress and safe non-toxic sleep

Safe

Natural Latex is a product from Mother Nature, produced from the sap of the rubber tree so it is safe to sleep on. But don’t be fooled, some manufacturers blend in cheap and low quality synthetic rubber (SBR) and other hazardous materials which can cause toxic off-fumes.

Healthy sleep

Healthy

The latex sap from the rubber tree contains antibacterial compounds, a trait that is transferred to our natural latex mattresses. Furthermore, latex sap is dust mite resistant by nature.

Environmental friendly mattress

Environmental friendly

Tapping a rubber tree to collect the sap will not kill the tree so they continue to remove carbon dioxide from the air for many years to come. Our mattresses do not add to the World`s mountains of trash. Latex mattresses last longer than other types of mattresses and they are biodegradable at the end of their life cycle.

Thailand is the world’s biggest producer of natural latex. Our factory is close to the source of raw material, thereby reducing our ecological footprint, and reducing our cost which means a cheaper price for you.

Best orthopaedic mattress

Spine Alignment

The unique, nonlinear compression profile of a rubber cell makes heavier parts of the body sink into the mattress while lighter areas are still supported. This optimal alignment of the spine keeps the pain away and improves blood circulation.

Breathable mattress

Breathable

The natural open-cell structure of latex allows optimal airflow and keeps your mattress dry. Combined with latex’ antimicrobial features latex mattresses are free from mold and mildew which makes for a cooler and more hygienic sleep.

No motion transfer mattress

Minimal Motion Transfer

The natural resiliency of latex means that movement on one side of the mattress is not transmitted easily to the other side.

When a latex foam mattress is made using only the milky fluid of the rubber tree, it is called a 100% natural latex mattress.

Many manufacturers pretend to make a 100% natural latex mattress but blend in cheaper synthetic latex, which is made from petroleum (SBR-styrene butadiene). The reasons for doing so are simple; synthetic latex foam is easy and quick to produce at a fraction of the cost of natural latex foam. It can also help to stabilize the natural latex.

Synthetic latex mattresses however can off gas chemicals and volatile organic compounds which makes them unhealthy to sleep on.

Khun Mattress doesn’t take any shortcuts when it comes to your health and refrains from adding synthetic latex the foam. We use natural latex milk only from rubber farms in the South of Thailand.

But we prefer to be completely honest. It is just impossible for any natural latex foam producer, to turn natural latex milk into a foam without adding some ingredients such as soaps and foaming agents.

You can compare it to baking waffles. You can't make waffles just by pouring milk into your waffle iron. You will need to mix in other dry ingredients (i.e. flour) so your batter will actually turn into a yummy waffle when you bake it.

So to be able to bake our foam, we add some ingredients to the latex milk (=vulcanisation). These ingredients are not harmful for your health, but they are there and their percentage needs to be taken into account.

Khun Matress foam is tested by the Rubber Authority of Thailand to have a minimum of 96% natural latex, and no more than 4% additives. This is one of the highest percentage natural latex in the mattress industry, your sleep just won’t get any healthier than that.

The raw material that goes into our latex foam mattress is natural latex milk harvested from rubber trees (Hevea Brasiliensis). These trees grow on rubber tree plantations in the Southern part of Thailand.

The rubber farmer will manually cut a wedge in the bark of the tree and “tap” the milk. The latex milk will flow into a small container attached to the tree. If done correctly, this process does not harm the tree in any way.

The collected milk is then sent to the processing plant.

So how does the ‘tree sap’ become a foam mattress? In order to mould the latex milk into a mattress shape, it must undergo the process of vulcanisation. This is a process in which the raw latex milk is mixed with additives and heated.

Compare it to baking a cake. You can’t make a cake just by pouring milk into a cake pan and shoving it in an oven. You will need to mix in other dry ingredients (i.e. flour, baking soda,…) so your batter will actually turn into a yummy cake when you bake it.

So we add some ingredients to the raw latex milk (i.e. foaming agents) before we pour it into the mattress mould. Next, the mould is heated and the mixture turns into foam. The natural latex foam is carefully removed from the mould and washed with soap and water. It is then dried and inspected for imperfections.

No cake is finished without some icing. We top off our mattress cake with a (GOTS) certified organic cotton cover. Now all you have to do is put the cherry on top!

  • We recommend using a slatted bed base (with slats 7.5cm or less apart) to allow your latex to breathe fully. However, any other bed frame or adjustable base will work just fine for a latex mattress.
  • Keep the mattress away from any heat source, cigarettes or fire.
  • Do not fold or bend your mattress.
  • Your mattress does not need to be flipped or rotated.
  • Keep the mattress away from direct sunlight or UV (i.e. without the inner and outer cover on it) because this can cause the latex to break down and shorten its’ life span.
  • Always use a mattress protector or pad on top of your mattress, just like with any other mattress, as we do not recommend washing the outer cover.
  • The outer cover can be refreshed by simply hanging it outside in the sun.
  • Stains can alter the composition of your mattress if they are left to set in. If you spill something, wash it immediately with mild soap and water. Make sure that all the parts of the mattress are perfectly dry before sleeping on it to avoid any risk of condensation forming inside the mattress.

Inside your Khun Mattress are 2 layers of latex; a 15cm base layer and a 5cm top comfort layer. The comfort layer is available in three firmness feels; soft – medium – firm.

Split firmness or dual comfort zone is available for King and Queen size mattresses, allowing a custom feel for either side of the mattress.

Before we can suggest the right firmness for you we need to explain the difference between ‘firmness’ and ‘support’.

‘Firmness’ refers to how soft or firm the bed feels to you. ‘Firm’ to one person may feel as ‘soft’ to another, depending on what mattresses we’re used to sleep on in the past and what we think a mattress should feel like.

‘Support’ on the other hand refers to the mattress’ ability to minimize pressure points and keep the spine aligned. The unique, nonlinear compression profile of a rubber cell makes heavier parts of the body sink into the latex mattress while lighter areas are still supported. This optimal alignment of the spine keeps the pain away and improves blood circulation.

But how do you know which firmness is right for you?

As mentioned before, this is mostly a question of personal preference. A good rule of thumb is that the choice of firmness is related to the weight and position of the sleeper.

For heavier people (weight over 90kg), we recommend our firm mattress, as they will tend to just sink into a softer one which means their spines will not be properly supported. Medium firmness is suitable for someone with a body weight up to 90kg. Very light people and children (weight under 50kg) will sleep better on soft mattresses.

For side sleepers we recommend a softer mattress so the shoulder and hip can sink in more. Back sleepers often prefer a more firm mattress which keeps the back as natural straightened as possible. Same rule of thumb goes for stomach sleepers, a firmer mattress keeps the hips from pushing too far into the mattress and helps to keep the spine better aligned.

And remember, you have 30 days from the date you receive your mattress to be sure you have chosen the firmness level that is 100% right for you. If you decide within that period that you’d prefer it a bit softer or firmer than your original choice, we will replace the top comfort layer of latex.

ALL our mattresses are made from 100% natural latex. This means we only use the milky fluid tapped from the rubber tree and we don’t add synthetic latex milk to the mixture.

For our organic range of mattresses, the latex milk we use comes from IFOAM accredited organic rubber farms in Thailand.

Organic rubber farms are not allowed to use any chemicals on the plantation (no pesticides or fertilizers), the farmers get a proper wage, and farming practices are designed to help preserve the environment.

So when choosing between 100% natural latex or certified organic, it really comes down to your personal lifestyle. The social and environmental impact of organic latex meets higher standards than that of 100% natural latex but this latex comes with a slightly higher price tag.

But rest assured, both our 100% natural and organic latex mattresses are healthier and more environmentally friendly compared to other mattresses available in the market.

For more information about IFOAM and its organic farming standards, click here.

Of course we do! Let’s explain to you why we are convinced that a natural (organic) latex mattress is the best choice for your little one.

Latex Foam

As you already know, ALL our mattresses are made from 100% natural latex. This means we only use the milky fluid tapped from the rubber tree and we don’t add synthetic latex milk to the mixture. The Khun Mattress baby mattress is certified by ECO-Institut, fulfilling the strictest requirements on hazardous emission and pollutants.

For our organic range of baby mattresses, the latex milk we use comes from IFOAM accredited organic rubber farms in Thailand. This means even more benefits for baby’s health, and the health of Mother Nature.

Cover

Like all our regular mattresses, we use GOTS certified organic cotton for the cover, a natural material that allows better airflow and moisture absorption. The cover has a large zip which allows you to remove it easily and wash it.

We do recommend to use an extra mattress protector because as we all know; babies can make a few spills here and there and having a waterproof layer of protection will definitely make midnight-sheet-changes easier.

Firmness and Fitting

When it comes to mattress firmness, you shouldn’t compare what’s comfortable for an adult, with what’s comfortable for a baby.

Actually, the firmer the crib mattress, the safer for your baby. Young babies just don’t have enough strength yet and may sink into a soft mattress and suffocate. Firm mattresses also offer the needed resistance babies need as they learn to roll over, push up, and eventually stand in the crib.
Khun Mattress uses density 80/85; firm, but not rock-hard.

Furthermore, the mattress should be tight-fitting so there is no chance of your baby getting trapped between the mattress and the crib. That is why we customize the mattress to perfectly fit the bed, including curved edges. Just let us know the exact dimensions you need and add a drawing in case you are ordering a non-rectangular mattress. You can simply trace the existing mattress onto a piece of wrapping paper or trace the space in the crib where the mattress would sit. We will use this as our template to cut the mattress.

Benefits of Latex for Babies

Cool, non-sweaty nights

The open-cell structure of natural latex allows optimal airflow. On top of this, natural latex foam has pinholes from the manufacturing process, increasing airflow even more. Both features make the mattress highly breathable and cool to sleep. A useful feature in hot Thailand because excessive sweating is often the cause of night-time awakenings of babies.

Breath cleaner air and prevent allergies

A natural latex mattress is resistant to dust mites because it is an inhospitable environment for them to live in. So, no need to treat the mattress with harmful chemicals against dust-mite allergies as it is already resistant by nature.
Many conventional crib mattresses contain petroleum-based foams, chemical fire retardants and other toxicants. The inhalation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from these toxic mattresses may cause all sorts of health issues, including allergies and respiratory problems.

Sleeping on Khun Mattress, your child will breathe in cleaner air which helps them to stay allergy free.

Yes, we do.

We however do not recommend placing a topper on a old, sagging or worn out mattress. This might seem a cheaper solution than buying a new mattress but a topper will only mask the problem for a short time.

A topper should only be added to a new, well functioning, mattress.

To make your mattress more firm we recommend a topper of minimum 7.5cm thickness. A 5cm topper may be sufficient to obtain a softer, more plush feel.

Khun Mattress warrants that its 100% natural latex mattresses shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 15 years.

Sagging/sinking:

Our mattresses are manufactured using the Dunlop process, which provides a heavier, denser mattress that will hold its form for many years to come. We use only 100% Natural latex because adding synthetic latex foam breaks down faster resulting in the sagging of the mattress.

For Khun Mattress firmness and resilience characteristics we refer to TUV/LGA test report 21249978-001.

During the warranty period of 15 years we guarantee a maximum sagging depth of 1.5 cm, the strictest in the mattress industry.
